Valentine's Day gifts have become very popular in today's age across the world. While friends, family and couples celebrate this occasion by exchanging tokens of love, this day has a very ancient history which has its roots in Christian and Roman traditions.

One of the oldest legends goes back to Rome, when the country was under the rule of Claudius II. The emperor was believed to have outlawed the tradition of marriage in the country as he wanted young, unmarried men in his army.

During the regime of Claudius II there was a priest in Rome by the name of Saint Valentine. It is said that Saint Valentine opposed the law against matrimony and continued to wed young couples in secrecy.

On being found out, Saint Valentine was put behind bars by the emperor. According to a second legend, the saint is believed to have sent a card to a loved one on the evening prior to his execution. This note became one of the very first Valentine's Day gifts in history. As the card was signed by Saint Valentine, the term Valentine has become famous.

In order to commemorate this legendary Saint, the day of his execution started being observed by the Roman Catholics. As accounts of the Saint's sacrifice and courageous service started spreading far and wide, this occasion became synonymous with love and exchanging Valentine's Day gifts. Soon the custom spread over to all the western countries in the world including the United States, South Africa, Great Britain and France where the day is till date celebrated in a very traditional way.

In the present times, Valentine's Day gifts are exchanged all over the globe and they have become associated with the sharing of good times and affection between friends, families and loved one's. Some of the most popular presents include love notes, flowers, chocolates and soft toys.
